Saint Mary's College Students Urging Community to “Pedal for the Planet” on April 23
MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's College of California is sponsoring its third annual Bike-to-School Day in support of Earth Day 2008 to promote the bicycle as a healthy, fun and environmentally sustainable alternative to the automobile. The "Pedal for the Planet" event will take place on Wednesday, April 23, between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Moraga Mayor Lynda Deschambault has proclaimed April 23, 2008 “Bike to Saint Mary’s College Day.” The event is open to all students, faculty and staff as well as the greater Lamorinda community. Student organizers are encouraging the campus community and its neighbors to participate by leaving their cars at home and biking to campus. They will be providing a free breakfast and T-Shirt (while supplies last) to participants and holding a raffle with prizes that include an iPod Shuffle and iTunes gift cards. All Lamorinda community members who cycle to campus will receive a free pass to the college’s lunchtime barbecue, where the winner of the Saint Mary’s residence hall energy conservation competition will be announced. Pedal for the Planet — part of Saint Mary’s ongoing sustainability initiative — is organized by the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, Project Green, the SMC Cycling Club and the Campus Activity Board. ###
