| Large 50-gal. recycling bins were delivered to Augustine Hall and installed on each floor in the alcoves formerly used for telephone booths. Recycling Guidelines posters were framed and mounted on the wall above each recycling bin.
Augustine's RA's and RD's held floor meetings for all residents to announce the recycling program, distribute recycling bins for each room, and explain the recycling procedures, and 'Dump Day' schedules. Students were asked to volunteer as Recycling Monitors for each floor to assist L&CS Teams, and oversee recycling collection on 'Dump Days'.
Student Teams made a brief presentation to the residents on their respective floors to explain the rationale for the recycling program, educate, and motivate the residents to participate in the program. The Teams brought a recycling fact sheet, statistics, and posters.
Each bin was mounted with or contained the following:
* Exterior: An identifying room number sticker
* Exterior: A large sticker containing a list of Recycling Guidelines
* An 8.5 x 11 poster with a copy of the Recycling Guidelines
* Bin Contract and Recycling Pledge which each student resident must sign;
(1 signed copy will be returned to the RA; the other copy is for the student);
Contract - Pledge (composed and edited by inspired Student Team members-- parody intentional):
Recycling Bin Contract and Pledge
I promise to love, cherish, and care for my blue recycling bin, and take full responsibility for it.
I solemnly promise to use the bin to hold only appropriate recyclable materials, and to support and participate fully in St. Mary’s College Recycling Program.

Once the equipment was in place and the residents were educated about the project, recycling began late in March. Easter Vacation closed the dorm for 10 days in April. The final results were tabulated on May 11th:
3rd and *4th Floors: 542 lbs. 62 students @ 8.74 lbs/student
2nd Floor: 419 lbs. 43 students @ 9.74 lbs/student
*Ground and 1st Floors: 406 lbs. 61 students @ 6.66 lbs/student
(*Ground and 4th are 'partial' floors with a small number of students on each floor.)
The students on 3rd and 4th floors were the collective competition winners but the individual winners, clearly, were the students on 2nd floor with almost 10 lbs. of recycled material per student in the short period since the recycling program started. The prize ($500) was distributed in three awards (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) so that all the students shared in the prize.
